Life Expectancy in Indonesia Still Low, BSN Encourages the Application of SNI in Healthcare Facilities

JawaPos.com – In Southeast Asia, Indonesia’s Life Expectancy (LE) is still relatively low. According to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the LE of the Indonesian population reached 73.93 years in 2023.

Several factors contribute to this low life expectancy, including limited healthcare infrastructure, medical services, and a shortage of qualified medical professionals.

To achieve Indonesia's vision of becoming a developed nation by 2045, one of the key indicators is the target of achieving a life expectancy of 80 years. However, with the current healthcare management situation, this vision seems unachievable.

To reach this target, healthcare facilities (fasyankes) must be S.M.A.R.T (Safe, Quality, Secure, Friendly, Affordable). In addition to S.M.A.R.T, the application of the Indonesian National Standards (SNI) in healthcare tools and facilities also needs to be promoted.

This information was shared by Donny Purnomo, the Secretary General of the National Standardization Agency (BSN), at the International Healthcare Engineering Forum (INAHEF) 2024 in Jakarta on Tuesday (17/9).

According to Donny, the application of SNI related to medical tools and healthcare facilities should be promoted, as many standards have already been established.

"However, the implementation needs to be supported collectively by collaborating and synergizing with all relevant parties for mutual progress," Donny stated.

As of August 2024, BSN has established 15,231 SNI standards, of which 463 are related to medical tools and healthcare facilities, and remain active.

INAHEF 2024 is a forum initiated and supported by the Presidential Staff Office (KSP), the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri), the Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin), and BSN.

The event is organized by the Indonesian Association of Healthcare Engineering (PTPI) in collaboration with industries, universities, associations, and regional governments.

The event aims to formulate the implementation plan for government programs in the 2024–2029 period, especially in the healthcare sector.

Additionally, the forum is designed to gather input from regional areas, formulate, and implement initiatives across all regions in Indonesia through congresses. The event also assesses the compliance of products supporting SMART Hospitals with regulations and awards industries that have adhered to these standards.

At the same occasion, PTPI President Eko Supriyanto stated that the International Healthcare Engineering Forum is held to develop a model and program for 2025-2029 to strengthen healthcare facilities and the healthcare industry.

"This includes programs for health screenings for 9 Priority Diseases, a structured, systematic, massive, and modern TB management program, the fulfillment of healthcare facilities across Indonesia, as well as the domestic medical device industry structure model and healthcare facility financing model," explained Eko.

The agenda was attended by officials from central and regional governments, healthcare facilities, universities, professional associations, healthcare associations, and consultants and contractors involved in healthcare facilities.
